Ray is a sought-after Reputation and Influence Strategist with 25 years’ experience in establishing and leading board-level integrated communications strategies, thought-leadership initiatives, reputation risk management, corporate positioning and differentiated brand purpose. Working closely with CEOs, international brands and local conglomerates, he is recognised in particular for his in-depth experience in leading IPOs, deal and financial communications, and issues and crisis management.
Bringing key insights into boardrooms as the CEO of Engage SEA, Ray provides senior counsel to clients in ASEAN with an additional focus in government and public affairs, investor relations and CEO/Leadership positioning knowledge.
Prior to Engage SEA, he has held regional CEO roles at Edelman for about ten years, leading Indonesia, and before that, the Malaysia’s operations. Responsible for about 200 consultants combined, Ray’s credited for advising renowned local and foreign organisations in Indonesia and growing Malaysia’s team to be the largest PR firm in the country.
He has implemented highly visible communications strategies for Felda Global Ventures’ IPO (world’s second largest behind Facebook), Tune Insurance to a premium on its opening, MBF and MISC restructuring, SONA Petroleum deal comms, Shell Global Solutions expansion, AMMB and Metlife M&A, BRDB, Bank Islam Brunei transformation and Bloomberg’s launch in Malaysia. In Indonesia, Ray led the Garuda and BRI Syariah IPOs, Chevron, Shell, Impex and Total business disruptions, TPS investor engagement narrative, Pertamina training and Bank Indonesia Tax Amnesty programme.
Ray is also the only Malaysian PR consultant to take delegations from two countries to the World Economic Forum Davos, counting 4 years of experience supporting client’s media and stakeholder engagement there. At Edelman, he has also provided senior counsel to Bank Indonesia, World Islamic Economic Forum, Hewlett Packard, Unilever, USAID, GIZ, ASEAN Secretariat and the European Union, MRT Corp, Pavilion KL, Emery Oleochemicals and Sarawak Energy – and has conducted over 100 spokesperson and crisis trainings and messaging workshops in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, to-date.
His other agency role includes General Manager at G2PR, part of the multinational WPP Grey network, for over three years, growing the team’s competencies across corporate, consumer, technology and sports marketing.
Before agency life, he was Head of Corporate Communications at OSK Investment Bank as it transitioned from a Universal Broker to a full-fledged Investment Bank, and Managing Editor of a regional trade publication house.
Ray obtained his LLB from the University of London and a Professional Diploma in Public Relations from the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia, and is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia.
